Bush ends 8-day Asian trip in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush's 8-day Asian junket has concluded with his arrival in Honolulu after a cloak-and-dagger departure from Indonesia.

Security concerns Monday night led to Bush's helicopter flight from Bogor to Jakarta to be conducted in darkness, with both airports blacked out. Bush had met outside of Jakarta with Indonesian Prime Minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to avoid numerous anti-U.S. demonstrations in the world's largest Muslim country.

Air Force One took off in darkness and arrived in Honolulu 13 hours later, where Bush and his wife Laura were greeted by local dignitaries and U.S. Navy Adm. William Fallon, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command.

Bush kept a low profile and made no statements to the media, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Tuesday.

The Bushes and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended a private dinner and were scheduled to return to Washington by Tuesday evening.

The trip was centered on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vietnam, which ended last weekend. Bush traveled from Washington to Moscow, to Hanoi, Singapore and Jakarta.
