Israel calls off airstrike

GAZA, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza assembled in and near the house of a suspected militant, forcing Israel to call of a planned airstrike against the structure.

The inhabitants surrounded the house Sunday, ignoring a telephone warning from Israel, reports The New York Times.

Those at the scene, which included Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, stayed around the house and on its balconies and roof throughout the day, the report said.

Later, protesters claimed the incident was a victory for their "popular resistance." But Israel said it was another example of militants using civilians to hide their activities.

"We see it as a cynical exploitation of our attempt to avoid harm to civilians," an Israeli military spokesman was quoted as saying. "They are using them as human shields."

Palestinians think their tactic could become a new defense which Israel may not be able to counter.

"We are so proud of this national stand," Haniyeh said. "It's the first step toward protecting our homes, the homes of our children."
