Suspect picked up in Detroit shootings

DETROIT, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Detroit police said they have arrested a man suspected of shooting five people -- killing three.

The first victim, Ophelia Fry, 58, was shot and killed in front of the Angel Land Day Care Center, where she worked as a cook, just before 6 a.m. Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported. Arthur Smith was gunned down a block away.

Another man, Elton Ash, was wounded when Smith was killed, and two more men were shot and wounded nearby. All the shootings occurred within 10 minutes.

Police originally said two men were involved with the shootings and released descriptions of both. Later they said they believe that only one man was involved.

Mamie Robinson arrived at Angel Land at 6:30 a.m. with her son, found the center surrounded by police and then closed for the day.

"She was such a sweet pleasant person," Robinson said of Fry. "I don't know how anyone could have done this to her."

The suspect could be formally charged Friday, police said.
