Chavez warns opponents to back off

CARACAS, Venezuela, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Friday warned his opponents not to meddle in the country's affairs during presidential elections, Globovision TV reported.

The outspoken leftist leader said opposition leaders and media outlets might try to disrupt the Dec. 3 elections. Chavez said if they did he would be forced to take "drastic actions."

Chavez currently has a double-digit lead in the polls. He has previously accused the United States of meddling in Venezuelan affairs, and alleged the Bush administration played a role in the April 2002 failed coup attempt against him.

The White House denied the allegation, but supported Chavez's overthrow at the time.
