10 believed dead in Nepal avalanches

KATHMANDU, Nepal, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Four Sherpa climbers have been killed in an avalanche on one Himalayan peak in Nepal, while six climbers are missing on another peak.

On Ama Dablam, an avalanche buried Camp 3. Three Sherpas and three western climbers from two different teams were missing, Everest News reported.

A helicopter was searching the slopes, but authorities said there was little hope that any of the missing would be found alive.

The four dead Sherpas were employed by the Ladinia International Pumori Expedition-2006, an Italian group climbing Mount Pumori, ekantipur.com reported. They were identified as Ang Zangbo Sherpa, 33, of Patle-1 of Okhaldhunga; Phurba Thundu Sherpa, 31, of Gaurishanker-1, Dolakha; Pemba Wangdi Sherpa, 47 of Dolakha; and Lhakpa Nurbu Sherpa of Sankhuwasabha.

Pumori, about five miles west of Mount Everest, is 23,494 feet high. Ama Dablam, also near Everest, is 22,349 feet high.
