Spanish PM says ETA must embrace peace

Nov. 15, 2006 at 8:43 PM   |   Comments

MADRID, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Spain's prime minister said the months-long cease fire with the Basque separatist ETA is not an opportunity for the group to rearm, EFE news agency reported.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said ETA must prove it is committed to peace and, if it wants to move forward in the peace process, it must make the first move.

Some 850 people have been killed in ETA attacks over the last three decades, during which ETA has been fighting for an independent homeland along the Spanish-French border.
