U.S. to test new citizenship exam

BOSTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. immigration officials are developing a citizenship test that focuses more on Constitutional values than trivial facts, The Boston Globe reports.

The Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of Homeland Security, will roll out a version of the test for volunteers this winter in Boston and nine other cities. The test will focus more on the Bill of Rights and democracy than what colors are on the flag, the Globe said.

OCIS spokesman Shawn Saucier told the newspaper the goal is to have about 5,000 people take the new test and have it finalized for national use in 2008.

"A lot of the current questions really are trivia questions," Saucier said. "The new test is designed to encourage immigrants to really look at our history and government and what we value as a society."

The other pilot program cities are Albany, N.Y.; Charleston, S.C.; Denver; El Paso, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; Miami; San Antonio; Tucson; and Yakima, Wash.
