Man admits 22-year-old sex assault

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A 41-year-old man pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sexual relations with a drunken female student 22 years ago in a University of Virginia fraternity house.

William Beebe faces up to two years in prison for aggravated sexual battery under the terms of his plea agreement, the Charlottesville Daily Progress reported. But his actual sentence could be shorter.

Beebe agreed to assist with an investigation into whether other fraternity brothers sexually assaulted Liz Schimpf Seccuro at the Phi Kappa Psi house in October 1984. Seccuro, 17 at the time, had been given beer and a punch containing grain alcohol.

"This has been a very long road," she said.

Beebe started the process that led to his guilty plea when he wrote Seccuro a letter apologizing for what happened that night.

"This began as an effort to make amends," he said in a statement. "In pleading guilty today to a lesser charge, I acknowledge formally what I tried to acknowledge in my letter. Twenty-two years ago I harmed another person, and I have tried to set that right."
