WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Pentagon officials have said U.S. Defense Secretary-designate Robert Gates is not expected to reverse military and terrorism decisions made by Donald Rumsfeld.
Current and former officials at the Pentagon said Gates is not expected to change the transformation of the Army implemented by Rumsfeld or make significant cutbacks to the War on Terror, The Washington Times reported Monday. Instead, Gates is expected to focus on winning the Iraq War and bringing U.S. troops home.
"He definitely is not seen as someone wimping out on the global war," said one Pentagon adviser. "How he does it, and what tools, and who he entrusts with them, that's a whole different issue."
President Bush hailed Gates -- who led the CIA during the administration of Bush's father President George H.W. Bush -- Saturday as an "agent of change" in the Department of Defense.
"He has experience leading large and complex organizations, and he has shown that he is an agent of change," Bush said. "He will provide a fresh outlook on our strategy in Iraq, and what we need to do to prevail."
