COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- A U.N. official said Sri Lanka government forces are recruiting children to fight against rebels.
The U.N. official said Sri Lankan military recruited child soldiers to fight against the renegade Karuna, a breakaway faction in Tamil Tigers, which also was accused of using children as soldiers, the BBC said.
A spokesman for the Karuna denied the allegations, saying the group offered to protect children from fighting, the BBC said.
But Allan Rock, a special adviser to the U.N. representative for children and armed conflict, said government forces forcibly rounded up young Tamil children for the Karuna group. He said 13- and 14-year-olds were kidnapped from villages.
Rock said Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse promised a full investigation into the allegations would be conducted, the BBC reported.
