MOGADISHU, Somalia, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The Union of Islamic Courts and members of the Somali parliament signed a peace agreement Saturday.
But a spokesman for the transitional government told the BBC the pact is "irrelevant" and said the parliamentarians had no authority to negotiate.
Somalia has had no government since 1991, when warlords ousted Siad Barre. This year, the Union of Islamic Courts gained control over the capital, Mogadishu, and much of the surrounding area, while the transitional government has little reach outside the town of Baidoa.
The agreement released by the union in Mogadishu includes a call for extension of the U.N. arms embargo. The transitional government wants an end to the embargo.
