WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- The number of deployed U.N peacekeepers has surpassed a record high set in 1993.
The U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations reports nearly 81,000 military and police personnel, along with 15,000 civilians, now serve in 18 different missions worldwide.
The report issued Friday predicts the peacekeeping budget "could reach $7 billion."
Jean-Marie Guehenno, undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations, says the "unprecedented growth represents a growing confidence in United Nations peacekeeping as a means to help build stability after conflict."
Current deployment tops the 78,444 personnel who served in peace operations in July, 1993, when about one third of the "blue helmets" were stationed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Current missions are in Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Top troop contributors are Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Jordan and Nepal, the report says.
Top financial contributors are the United States (27 percent), Japan (19 percent), Germany (9 per cent), Britain (7 percent) and Italy (5 percent). Contributions are set by a formula established by member nations.
