Mexico City recognizes same-sex unions

MEXICO CITY, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Lawmakers in Mexico City have officially recognized same-sex civil unions.

The decree, which must be ratified by the capital's mayor, allows for gay couples to register their unions with the city, giving them pension and inheritance rights, El Universal reported Friday.

The party of Mexico's President-elect Felipe Calderon, the National Action Party, has denounced the lawmakers' decision.
