Escalator pileup injures 8 in Toronto

TORONTO, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- At least eight people were injured, one of them seriously, in a morning rush hour chain-reaction pileup on an escalator in Toronto's Union Station.

Investigators believe that someone tripped or fell near the top of the crowded escalator at 7:42 a.m., The Toronto Sun reported Thursday. Police also are trying to determine if there was a mechanical problem with the moving stairway.

Larry Roberts, a spokesman for Toronto Emergency Medical Services, said that one person was in the trauma unit at St. Michael's Hospital with a severe spinal cord injury. He said that most of the injuries involved cuts, scrapes, bruises and sore necks.

"They were basically on the bottom of the pile, so with 10 or 20 people falling on you, those injuries are of general crushing," he said.
