DENVER, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Democrat Bill Ritter was elected to Colorado's open governor's seat Tuesday, beating Republican Bob Beauprez.

The GOP had held the governorship for eight years, but Ritter rolled up heavy votes, even in Republican bastions, the Denver Post reported.

Ritter campaigned hard across the state -- he had to, since Democrats are heavily outnumbered by registered Republicans, and there are nearly 1 million independent voters, the Post said.

Technical problems plagued Denver polling places throughout the day, and some of the city's 55 voting centers reported waits of more than two hours.
