BALTIMORE, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Ten-term Democratic Rep. Benjamin Cardin defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele in the race for Maryland's open U.S. Senate seat.
With 97 percent of precincts reporting Wednesday, Cardin had a 10-percentage-point lead over Steele, 54 percent to 44 percent.
"How sweet it is," Cardin, 63, told cheering supporters in a victory speech at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. "This is really about the people of Maryland and I am humbled that they have given me the opportunity to be the new United States senator."
Cardin succeeds Paul Sarbanes who retired after 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
The Baltimore Sun said issues including Iraq, embryonic stem cell research and voter dissatisfaction with U.S. President George Bush helped Cardin beat Steele, a 48-year-old African-American viewed as a rising Republican star.
