Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush Wednesday said former CIA Director Robert Gates will bring a fresh perspective to the Pentagon.
At a White House news conference, Bush named Gates to succeed Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
"Sometimes it's necessary to have a fresh perspective," Bush said. "He'll (Gates) also bring great managerial experience. And he is -- I had a good talk with him on Sunday in Crawford (Texas). ... He understands we're in a global war against these terrorists. He understands that defeat is not an option in Iraq."
Gates, a career CIA employee, headed the spy agency from Nov. 6, 1991, to Jan. 20, 1993, during the presidency of Bush's father.
