Tanker truck plunges from Miami highway

MIAMI, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Interstate 95 in Miami was closed for hours after an out-of-control tanker truck fell from the highway into the parking lot of a church and exploded.

The driver of the truck was killed in Monday's crash, the Miami Herald reported. Police had not released his identity Monday night. No one else was injured.

The fiery explosion reportedly terrified a class of 3-year-olds at St. James Catholic School who were on their way to recess when the truck crashed into a guardrail.

"The children started screaming bloody murder," teacher Marie Alexandre told the Herald.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed in the vicinity of the crash for four hours. A southbound on-ramp is expected to remain closed for several days for repairs.

The driver, employed by Pipeline Transportation of Jacksonville, was making a fuel delivery to a Chevron station 30 blocks south of the crash scene. Police said that he struck a Ford Ranger, careened down the highway for almost a mile and then went through the guardrail.
