Report says Democrats have House majority

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Democrats have won control of the U.S. House of Representatives, CNN projected late Tuesday.

The cable network said the Democratic Party had accrued a net gain of 15 seats in the House, enough to wrest control from the Republicans, with a number of races still to be decided.

The Democrats only claimed a net gain of 13 when CNN made its projection. The party's Web site said it had gained three seats in the Senate -- with a pickup of six needed for a majority -- 13 seats in the House, and four governor's chairs.

If CNN's projection holds, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is expected to become the first woman Speaker of the House in U.S. history.
