Taiwan opposition seeks to oust president

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang Monday began another effort to oust President Chen Shui-bian, who has refused to quit over the latest corruption scandal.

A KMT motion against Chen in parliament, the third such in recent months, is expected to be voted on later this month, reports Mainland China's official Xinhua news agency.

On Sunday, Chen again rejected corruption accusations and said he would step down only if his wife is convicted on charges of embezzlement of state funds brought against her by Taiwan's public prosecutor. The prosecution has alleged Chen is also involved in the corruption but cannot indict him while he is in office.

Xinhua reported the People First Party, another major opposition party, has expressed support for the KMT motion. Both urged the Taiwan Solidarity Union and lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party to support their motion against Chen.
