BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, after a week's visit to Central Asia, said Saturday the European Union must make the area a priority.
Steinmeier ended his five-country trip in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, Deutsche Welle reported.
"The need for an initiative for Central Asia by the European Union has never been clearer to me than after this trip," Steinmeier said.
The European Union has an embassy in Almaty, Kazakhstan, which handles relations with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as well. The other countries in the Central Asian bloc of former Soviet republics are Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
Steinmeier said the European countries should not let the war in Afghanistan distract them from Central Asia, where the United States, Japan, China and Russia are already involved.
