DENVER, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A Denver minister has resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals while denying that he had a three-year affair with a male prostitute.
The Rev. Ted Haggard placed himself on administrative leave as minister of the New Life Church, the 14,000-member congregation he founded, the Denver Post reported. A lawyer for the church said allegations made by Mike Jones would be investigated by the board of overseers.
Jones said Haggard got in touch with him three years ago seeking a sexual encounter. He said he decided to make the affair public because he was disgusted by the hypocrisy of Haggard's opposition to same-sex marriage.
"I made myself cry and I made myself sick," Jones said. "I felt I owed this to the community. What he is saying is we are not worthy, but he is."
Jones produced an envelope he says came from Haggard and a voice-mail recording, the Post said. He also offered to take a lie detector test.
