Bush pushes filling judgeships

BILLINGS, Mont., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush, at a political rally in Billings, Mont., Thursday called for an end to the tactics that have left 50 federal judgeships vacant.

In another campaign swing in advance of Tuesday's mid-term elections -- this one in support of Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont. -- Bush railed against Democratic tactics that have kept judgeships from being filled.

"They filibustered or opposed 19 of my nominees to the Court of Appeals" since losing control of the Senate in 2002, Bush said.

"If the people of Montana want good judges, judges who will not legislate from the bench ... you vote for Conrad Burns for the United States Senate," Bush said.

The president also hit on familiar campaign themes of the economy, taxes and Iraq during an appearance at the MetraPark Arena.
