Mounties wiretapped provincial PM

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police accidentally wiretapped the premiere of British Columbia, a defense lawyer told the Canadian Supreme Court.

A lawyer for David Basi, a former adviser to Finance Minister Gary Collins, gave the accidental eavesdropping as an example of RCMP sloppiness. Basi was the target of a 2003 drug investigation and is now fighting an influence-peddling charge.

Investigators were trying to overhear Basi's conversations when they instead found themselves listening to Collins and Premiere Gordon Campbell.

Defense lawyer Kevin McCullough is trying to get access to wiretap transcripts and other evidence, complaining that the prosecution has been careless about handing over required documents to the defense.
