Britain fears new EU organized crime

LONDON, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Britain is bracing to cope with a reported crime threat once Bulgaria and Romania join the European Union in January, London's Sun newspaper said.

Citing a reportedly leaked government document, the Sun said up to 85 percent of cash machine crime in Britain has been linked to Romanian groups.

The government document expresses fears migrants from Bulgaria and Romania could add to organized crime in Britain with ATM crime, various street violencem fraud and sex trafficking, the Sun said.

Earlier this year, Britain formed the Serious Organised Crime Agency, or SOCA, to establish necessary safeguards to face a possible increase in organized crime.

In September, Home Secretary John Reid said British agencies have been working with Bulgarian and Romanian government officials on containing new crime threats.

Last month, Britain announced moves limiting inflows of migrant workers from Bulgaria and Romania, specifying only unskilled laborers would be permitted in food processing and agriculture, the BBC reported.
