Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
PAJU, South Korea, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. interfaith leaders meeting in South Korea Friday called for creating an "axis of peace" to end the Korean nuclear crisis.
Meeting at Imjingak near Panmunjom, at the demilitarized zone, the 127 members of Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu faiths proposed a high-level, non-governmental U.S. delegation travel to North Korea to initiate some level of dialogue between the two countries.
In 1994, during an earlier nuclear crisis, former President Jimmy Carter, acting as a private citizen, met with then North Korean leader Kim Il Sung. Their talks defused the tension.
The group is supported by the Universal Peace Federation, founded by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Moon is also founder of News World Communications Inc., parent company of United Press International.
In 1991, Moon met with Kim Il Sung in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang to discuss reconciliation between the two Koreas.
