Feds shoot fugitive armed with a shoe

ATLANTA, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A fugitive from south Florida was gunned down outside an apartment complex near Lithonia, Ga., by federal agents who thought he had a gun.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said agents from the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force were trying to arrest 24-year-old Youwus Vilpre early Wednesday on federal drug charges. Vilpre was also wanted on weapons charges.

U.S. Marshal Richard Mecum said Vilpre was part of a robbery crew that had been targeting businesses in Collier County, Fla. He told the newspaper Vilpre was also wanted for questioning in two homicides in the Fort Myers, Fla., area.

Mecum said Vilpre apparently had put his hand down inside a shoe and was pointing the shoe at the officers when he was shot. Agents said it was dark and they thought he had a gun.
