Couple denies kidnap to force abortion

PORTLAND, Maine, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A prominent Maine couple pleaded not guilty in Portland to kidnapping their pregnant teenage daughter to force her to get an abortion.

Nicholas and Lola Kampf, owners of a real estate development company, pleaded innocent Monday to kidnapping, assault and terrorizing charges in Cumberland County Superior Court and were allowed to remain free on $100,000 bond and can travel out of state.

The family tragedy became public Sept. 15 when their daughter called police from the back of a store in Salem, N.H., saying she had escaped from her parents, who wanted her to terminate her pregnancy, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Katelyn Kampf said her parents had tied her up with rope and were taking her from Maine to New York.

In addition to rope, police found duct tape and a rifle in the car and the father had ammunition in his pocket, the newspaper said.

The daughter dropped a request for a protection-of-abuse order, her lawyer said. The parents were prohibited from contacting their daughter.
