Police, demonstrators clash in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Hungarian police Monday used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon to disperse anti-government demonstrators in Budapest.

Budapest police spokesman Tibor Jarmi said the clash was triggered by demonstrators throwing stones and iron objects at police who tried to keep order as the government commemorated the 50th anniversary of Hungary's failed 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.

Riot police were backed up by mounted officers and helicopters flying over the sites of the clashes, Serbia's RTS radio-television said.

Several people, including police officers, were injured when about 1,000 demonstrators fought with police.

The clashes began after an opposition rally of 100,000 in downtown Budapest when Viktor Urban of the Fides Party asked his supporters to take action, RTS said.

Supporters of opposition parties have been staging mass and small protests, most of them peaceful, criticizing the leftist government of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany since mid-September, the BBC said.
