Commuter train hits truck, derails

FRANKLIN, Mass., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A commuter train hit a truck carrying a piece of construction equipment early Monday, shutting down a commuter line into Boston for most of the day.

The train was going about 30 mph when it hit the truck, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said. The engineer was about 400 yards from the truck when the engineer saw it stuck on the track.

"The engineer called out 'hang on' and immediately after there was a very hard impact, followed by windows breaking and the train car leaning over as if it would roll," Dillon Barfield of Uxbridge told the Boston Globe in an e-mail.

The crash, which caused most of the train to leave the rails, took place just before 8 a.m. in Franklin, a town southwest of Boston near the Rhode Island line.

The line was expected to reopen at the beginning of the evening rush hour.
