NICKEL MINES, Pa., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The new mother of an Amish baby has named her daughter after one of the five young girls slain in a Pennsylvania schoolhouse by a gunman this month.

Identified only as Lydia, the 22-year-old woman was in the schoolhouse on Oct. 2 when heavily armed Charles Roberts entered. He ordered all the boys and pregnant, or women with infants to leave.

He shot the 10 remaining girls, killing five of them before killing himself.

One of the dead was 7-year-old Naomi Rose Ebersol, whom Lydia said she instructed silently with hand gestures to pray before she ran from the building, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

After attending the slain girls' funerals, Lydia went into labor on Oct. 10, three weeks early, and delivered a healthy 6-pound, 4-ounce daughter, whom she named Naomi Rose, the newspaper said.

Among the first visitors after the birth was Katie Ebersol, the mother of the slain girl for whom the newborn was named, the Inquirer said.
