WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Virginia's John Warner, a key U.S. Senate Republican, says Iraq must deal with its violent sectarian militias as soon as possible.
"Get rid of those militias now, not tomorrow -- now," Warner told "Fox News Sunday." Warner is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The Bush administration is planning to give the Iraqi government a timetable to accomplish several goals, including the disarming of the militias, at the end of the year, the New York Times said.
Warner said those reports "indicate clearly the forward thinking of the administration, working with the government of Prime Minister (Nouri al-Maliki)."
Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., told Fox News the United States must rethink its plans on Iraqi reconstruction, not just search for a military resolution.
Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., a possible presidential candidate, told the program he did not believe Maliki could deal with the violent militia, particularly that of his Shiite supporters.
"I have no confidence in (Maliki's) ability and possibly his willingness to deal with taking on that Shia coalition," Biden said.
