JERUSALEM, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Several key Israeli Cabinet Ministers have called for military action along Gaza's southern border to help limit arms smuggling by Palestinian militants.
The Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported that the comments, made during Sunday's cabinet meeting by Cabinet Ministers Rafi Eitan and Eli Yishai, were focused around furthering last week's anti-smuggling operation by Israel Defense Forces.
"When we left the Philadelphi Route, I said that abandoning it is a doorway to hell," said Industry and Trade Minister Yishai. "The security cabinet, or the 'kitchen cabinet' (of seven key ministers) must discuss this matter now, instead of having to come up with a response plan following every ... attack."
Israeli Defense Minister Amir Perez has warned that the ongoing inability to create a political solution with the Palestinians could ultimately lead to intense military action within the Gaza Strip which could prove dangerous for Israel, Ha'aretz said.
