LONDON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A worldwide poll found Israel had the highest percentage of respondents saying the use of torture was acceptable to save innocent lives, the BBC reported.
The broadcaster polled more than 27,000 people in 25 countries, which averaged 29 percent in support of the limited use of torture, while 36 percent of people in the United States said it would be acceptable under certain conditions to combat terror.
Israel had the highest percentage of those endorsing the use of limited torture of prisoners, at 43 percent.
Globally, 59 percent of people were opposed to the use of torture altogether, with the U.S. total slightly lower at 58 percent.
"The dominant view around the world is that terrorism does not warrant bending the rules against torture," said Steven Kull, director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes, which assisted in the survey.
