Slovenia to build island in Adriatic Sea

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Slovenia has announced plans to build a 7.4-acre resort island with amusement parks and wellness centers in the northern Adriatic Sea, media said.

The $126-million island will be made of rock and earth to be excavated during the construction of a 4-mile-long highway linking the Slovenian ports of Koper and Izola, south of Italy's port of Trieste.

The island will rise about 10 feet above the sea level, Ljubljana media reported Thursday.

Slovenia's national development strategy said the island will be built between 2013 and 2020, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism said.

Ministry officials said there will be beaches all around the island, which will be linked by a bridge to Slovenia's mainland, the reports said.
