Rome subway crash kills 2, injures 150

ROME, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A speeding Rome subway train slammed into a second, stopped train Tuesday morning and killed at least two passengers and injured more than 150 others.

The stationary train was discharging passengers around 10 a.m. at the Piazza Bittorio station near the city's man terminal when the second train struck it from behind, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Of the injured, officials said about 60 were in serious condition, with the rest suffering relatively minor injuries.

A witness told Sky Italia TV part of the roof of the station then collapsed.

There was no immediate cause given for the crash.

The train that struck the stopped one was an almost brand new, Spanish-built high-tech model which the city is gradually phasing in to replace the older models, ANSA said.
