Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Washington could see a record number of women in the U.S. Senate come January if the latest polls hold true.
Six female incumbents up for re-election next month are leading challengers and two others could join the fold, USA Today reported.
The newest members of the club may be Democrats Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Claire McCaskill of Missouri, both leading opponents, late September polls indicate.
Expected to win re-election are Democrats Dianne Feinstein of California, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Maria Cantwell of Washington and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Republicans Olympia Snowe of Maine and Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas also hold double-digit leads in the polls.
Ruth Mandell, director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, told USA Today it is important that voters get used to seeing more women in government leadership roles so one day a woman can be elected president.
