Mass. candidate accuses rival of leaking

BOSTON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Deval Patrick, Democratic candidate for governor of Massachusetts, accuses his rival of leaking a story that his brother-in-law was convicted of marital rape.

Bernard Sigh's conviction was reported earlier this week in the Boston Herald.

Lt. Gov. Kerry Healy denied knowing anything about the leak. A campaign spokesman accused Patrick of making a "wild accusation" and demanded an apology.

Sigh was convicted in 1993 in California and served a short prison sentence.

"My sister and her husband went through a difficult time, and through hard work and prayer, they repaired their relationship and their lives," Patrick said. "I believe it serves no victim to have to relive such a thing in the public eye."

Sigh is required to register as a sex offender in Massachusetts, although the Herald said that as of Friday night he had not done so.
