TOKYO, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Japan's Cabinet confirmed unilateral economic sanctions Friday against North Korea, including a moratorium on all imports from the nation.
The Japanese government, reacting to North Korea's claimed nuclear test, set the import ban to begin Saturday and last six months, The Financial Times reported.
"The government decided to block all North Korean ships from entering Japanese ports from Oct. 14 to April 13 next year and also to ban all imports from North Korea for the same period," said Economics Minister Hiroko Ota.
North Korea exported some $120 million worth of goods, mostly seafood, to Japan last year.
An earlier resolution barring North Korean citizens from entering Japan took effect Wednesday, Kyodo News reported.
Tokyo said it would consider further sanctions against North Korea based on the other country's response.
Earlier sanctions against North Korea were imposed by Japan after missile test firings in July. North Korean government officials were barred from entering the country and the ferry Mangyongbong-92 was not allowed to make port calls.
