TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- The eight-year reign of Gov. Jeb Bush is nearing an end as Florida prepares to choose a new leader in a bruising GOP-Democratic battle.
After having won twice with solid margins, Bush, a Republican, is forced to step aside by term limits.
While there is no clear cut favorite to succeed him, Republican Charlie Crist so far has the upper hand in fundraising and TV ad time, particularly crucial since the Democratic candidate, Jim Davis, is not nearly as well known, statewide.
Crist, 50, has consistently led in the polls, handily defeated his primary opponent and has bulging coffers, part of which has gone to finance a full-scale media assault on Davis since right after the primary, Stateline.org said.
Davis, 49, was elected to Congress in 1996 after serving as a state legislator from Tampa. While Crist relies heavily on TV, Davis is crisscrossing the state, appearing at town meetings, news conferences and other forums.
