Musharraf denies Taliban support charge

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf told the commander of NATO in Afghanistan that his country is not supporting the Taliban as some reports have suggested.

Musharraf told the visiting British Gen. David Richards, "Pakistan is assisting Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism and extremism, besides hosting over 2.5 million Afghan refugees," the Press Trust of India reported.

Richards' visit comes in the wake of calls by NATO officers in Afghanistan for strong action against Pakistan for its support of Taliban, PTI said. Some reports also have suggested the Taliban is being trained inside Pakistan by its intelligence agency.

The Pakistani leader insisted his country supports a strong, secure and stable Afghanistan.
