Northern Greece hard hit by flooding

ATHENS, Greece, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Torrential rains over the weekend flooded vast areas of northern Greece, causing much damage and widespread power outages.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis left Athens to visit the affected areas Monday, the Athens News agency reported. He planned to meet with a government team to work out relief measures.

The worst-affected areas included the villages of Melissourgos, Stavro, and Olympiada, as well as locations along the Thessaloniki-Kavala stretch of the national highway.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
