MOSCOW, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Russia's prosecutor general in Moscow took over the investigation into the shooting death of a journalist known for criticizing Russian actions in Chechnya.
Police said Anna Politkovskaya, who wrote for Novaya Gazeta, was shot in the head and chest Saturday in her apartment building in Moscow, RIA-Novosti reported. Police said the shooting was "a premeditated and well-planned crime."
Novaya Gazeta journalists will conduct their own investigation into the shooting, RIA-Novosti said. Politkovskaya has been covering Chechnya since 1999, and has written articles critical of Russian conduct in the republic.
The U.S. State Department and international human rights organizations urged Russian officials to conduct a comprehensive investigation into Politkovskaya's death, RIA-Novosti said.
