500 passports stolen in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Taiwan police Saturday investigating the robbery of more than 500 passports from a leading travel agency are looking into whether it was an inside job.

Police say they suspect staff at Comfort Travel Service in Taipei may have been involved because the thieves knew exactly when and where to conduct the heist, The Taipei Times reports.

Police speculate a link between the stolen passports and Chinese nationals illegally entering Taiwan.

The travel agency had no immediate comment.

A travel agency employee said two gunmen wrestled away two bags of customer passports he was taking to Taiwan's international airport for customs clearance purposes.

The theft forced customers of 27 tour groups to scrap overseas travel plans.
