Polls see possible Democratic sweep

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Democrats are gaining momentum toward taking control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the Nov. 7 elections, polls indicated Friday.

Democrats have tightened Senate races in six key states, USA Today/Gallup polls show, expanding chances in Virginia and Tennessee. Other states where the new surveys show a strong challenge to Republicans were Missouri and Rhode Island while Maryland's contested Senate seat seems to be likely to remain in Democrat hands. The Democrat-held seat in New Jersey, however, could go to the Republicans.

U.S. President George Bush was seen as a liability in the six states polled.

Democrats must gain six seats in the Senate.

In the House, meanwhile, the bipartisan Battleground Poll said Democrats stand a better-than-even chance of winning a majority, The Washington Times reported. An earlier prediction said the net GOP loss could be as many as 30 seats.

That survey also shows an increased probability of the Democrats taking the Senate.
