Hungary PM survives parliament vote

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Hungary's prime minister survived a confidence vote in parliament Friday but the rightist opposition continued to demand his resignation.

A high-ranking official of the ruling Socialist party of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said the parliamentary vote of confidence should calm the country, which has seen weeks of violent street protests, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Gyurcsany, 45, apologized to the nation in parliament once again Friday for lying about the real economic situation to win a second term in April general elections.

Last Sunday, Gyurcsany's socialists suffered serious defeats in regional elections, losing power in most of Hungarian towns but not Budapest.

With support from 210 deputies of his socialist coalition, out of the 386-seat parliament, Gyurcsany has pledged to go on with rigid economic reforms.

Viktor Orban, leader of the conservative opposition, Friday called on Hungarians to keep on with protests until Gyurcsany is forced out of his office, the BBC said.
