E. coli outbreak claims life of toddler

CHUBBUCK, Idaho, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A Chubbuck, Idaho, toddler has become the second fatality in a nationwide outbreak of E. coli bacteria tied to fresh-bagged spinach.

Health officials in the state said 2-year-old Kyle Allgood was infected with the same strain, O157:H7, as other victims tied to spinach consumption, ABC News reported Friday. The toddler died of an E. coli-linked kidney disease Sept. 20 at a Salt Lake City Hospital.

"We are very sorry for Kyle and his family," said Idaho State Epidemiologist Dr. Christine Hahn. "This type of E. coli can be very dangerous for everyone but especially young children and the elderly."

There have been a total 192 reported cases of E. coli related to the outbreak. Kyle Allgood was the second fatality.

U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan of the Northern District of California announced Thursday that search warrants had been issued Oct. 4 for Growers Express in Salinas, Calif., and Natural Selection Foods in San Bautista, Calif., in connection with the outbreak.

The Food and Drug Administration, the State of California, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture were continuing to investigate the cause of the outbreak.
