Critics assail Speaker Hastert over Foley

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Time is short for U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., to act in the Mark Foley incident, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald said in an editorial.

The Herald, which serves Hastert's home district, did not call for his resignation as others have, but said he has waited too long to respond to the sex scandal allegations against the former Florida Republican congressman.

"If Speaker Dennis Hastert fails to ride out this storm, he will in some regards have no one but himself to blame," the Herald said. "Time is growing short for Hastert to take any step that might partially calm the controversy."

Foley, who news reports say may be gay, stepped down after inappropriate e-mail messages with male House pages became public.

The conservative Washington Times was more adamant in calling for the speaker's resignation for knowing of the e-mails earlier this year but doing nothing about them. The Times said Hastert was "grossly negligent" or just "looked the other way."
