U.S. population approaches 300 million

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. population, which has been growing at a rate of one person every 10 seconds for 100 years, is forecast to hit the 300 million mark this month.

The growth rate of the last 100 years is expected to remain the same for another 50 years, reports The Los Angeles Times.

The U.S. Census Bureau expects the arrival of the 300 millionth American in the middle of this month but the rest of the country may not know the identity of the person as no mechanism exists to count each new arrival, says the report. That person could be a newborn or an immigrant.

The population count is based on birth, deaths and immigration data collected on a monthly basis by the bureau. The population count is based on one birth per seven seconds, one death per 13 seconds and one net immigration increase per 30 seconds. Immigration accounts for about 40 percent of the population growth, the Times said.

The U.S. population hit 100 million in 1915 and 200 million in 1967.
