Oil workers are frequent targets in the impoverished Niger Delta region and are usually released unharmed once a ransom is paid, The Daily Mirror said.

No group had yet claimed responsibility for the Tuesday night attack nor had any ransom requests been received, authorities said.

Mobil is the second largest oil operator in Nigeria, exporting about 650,000 barrels of crude a year.
